Govt introduces three bills in NA

ISLAMABAD: The federal government introduced three new bills during 5th sitting of the ongoing 30th session of the National Assembly here on Friday.

The State Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Muhammad Baligh Ur-Rehman introduced the Sir Syed (Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering) Institute of Technology, Islamabad Bill, 2016, which is aimed at establishing a new center of excellence for advanced studies in the field of engineering.  In addition, the Minister for Climate Change, Zahid Hamid, on behalf of Minister for Defence Production and Science and Technology Rana Tanveer Hussain, introduced the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology Bill, 2016 to provide the establishment of the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology.  Another government bill – The Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Bill, 2016 meant to impose ban on holding property in benami was introduced by the Minister for Finance Mohammad Ishaq Dar. The House referred all three bills to the concerned standing committees for further deliberations.

In addition, the government responded to one out of two Calling Attention Notices (CANs) appearing on the list of business of the House.  Parliamentary Secretary, Rao Muhammad Ajmal Khan responded to the notice regarding non-provision of subsidy on the essential commodities at the utility stores, which was jointly sponsored by PPPP lawmakers. Another CAN regarding non-availability of life saving drugs in the country was not taken up.

The House also approved a motion seeking permission to consider the Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (Conversion) Bill, 2016 in the upcoming Joint Sitting of the House on Monday. The motion was moved by the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Sheikh Aftab Ahmed. Another motion moved by the Parliamentary affairs minister on Supplementary Agenda regarding election to vacant seat in Senate from Islamabad was also approved by the House.

Meanwhile, Daniyal Aziz of PML-N presented standing committee report on the Foreign Exchange Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2014 on behalf of Chairman Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatization, Qaiser Ahmed while the Chairman, Standing Committee on National Food Security, Malik Shakir Bashir Awan presented the periodical report of the committee for the period ended on December 31, 2015 under rule 234A of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the National Assembly.
