pia ramesh and imranISLAMABAD: Lawmakers belonging to the National Assembly came down hard on the PIA administration on Thursday over breach of personal privilege and problems faced by legislators at airports. The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges met at the Parliament House to discuss Questions of Privilege moved by PML-N lawmakers Syed Imran Shah and Ramesh Kumar Vankwani against the PIA administration.

PIA Managing Director Shah Nawaz and Aviation Secretary Ali Muhammad Gardezi were also present to explain their position against the privilege motions.

The committee made it clear that it would take serious notice against PIA’s inappropriate behaviour towards lawmakers and directed the Aviation Secretary to present a report containing the findings of causes behind the breach of privileges.

The meeting started fifteen minutes behind the scheduled time and lasted two hours and 30 minutes. Low attendance was witnessed as only five out of 22 members were present at the outset and seven at the end of the sitting. In all, only nine members including the chairman attended the meeting.

One of the committee members – Shagufta Jumani – was reported for misconduct against the national carrier’s managing director.

The non-ministerial committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges considers matters of procedure and conducts of business in the National Assembly and recommends amendments to the rules, if needed. The committee also examines questions of privileges referred by the House or the Speaker and scrutinizes breach of lawmakers’ privilege besides giving recommendations on these issues.
