ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Deputy Speaker has directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to halt its operation against the cabin-shops set up at different points in the federal capital.

Giving his ruling on a Calling Attention Notice (CAN) regarding crackdown on these cabins by CDA, the Chair Tuesday also constituted a committee to report on this matter within six days.

The Deputy Speaker Javed Murtaza Abbasi was presiding over the proceeding of the House when it took up the CAN submitted jointly by PML-N and PTI lawmakers including Dr. Ibad Ullah, Mian Abdul Manan, Abdul Majeed Khanan Khail and Dr. Imran Khattak.

The movers had drawn attention of the House towards the lease cancellation of cabin-shops allotted during 1967 to 2000 by CDA. The State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab responded on behalf of the government. However, the Deputy Speaker said it was an urgent matter of public concern and asked CDA to stop cancelling the lease agreements of these small shops and compensate owners for the losses they faced due to demolition of cabins. He also called the cancellation of lease agreements ‘unlawful’.

The special committee constituted to look into this issue comprises ten members of the National Assembly with equal representation from treasury and opposition benches. The Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah also spoke on the subject and favored the proposal to form a committee.
