Parliament continues debate on Federal Budget

ISLAMABAD: The Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament on Wednesday continued debate on the Federal Budget 2015-16 and lawmakers – 16 each from both houses – participated in it.

In Senate, sixteen lawmakers expressed their views on a motion to make recommendations to National Assembly on the Finance Bill. Six of them belonged to PML-N which was followed by PPPP (4), MQM (3) and one each of PML, ANP and PkMAP.

Chairman Raza Rabbani chaired the sitting for two hours and 14 minutes while the remaining proceedings were presided over by the Deputy Chairman Abdul Ghafoor Haidri.

Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz gave a policy statement on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tirade against Pakistan and spoke for six minutes.

The House did not take up a calling attention notice (CAN) due to the absence of the mover that relates to the rapid increase in slum areas (Kachi Abadis) across the country, especially in Islamabad Capital Territory.

PPPP, ANP, PTI, BNP-A and PML Senators walked out of the House for 38 minutes for not broadcasting their speeches live on television.

Meanwhile, sixteen lawmakers expressed their views on the Federal Budget 2015-16 for 248 minutes in the National Assembly. These include six from PML-N, followed by PPPP, PTI, MQM (2 each) and one each from ANP, JI, JUI-F and AMLP.

Tabled by Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, the House passed a resolution to condemn the massacre of Muslims in Burma. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif attended the sitting for 32 minutes while the Leader of the Opposition Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah was present for 131 minutes.

Despite the passage of a motion during the second sitting for not allowing points of order (POs) during the budget session, 34 POs were raised consuming 100 minutes of the proceedings time.

The Speaker suspended the proceedings for seven minutes after exchange of harsh words between PTI Deputy Parliamentary leader and PML-N lawmaker. The next sitting of both houses will be held on Thursday.
