PSB sponsors only five teams in 3 years, NA told

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) sponsored national teams for only five international sports events during last three years; it emerges from the information revealed before the National Assembly in its last session.

In an answer to the question asked by PPPP MNA Shahida Rehmani, the Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Riaz Hussain Pirzada informed the House that that PSB arranged training camps, provided uniforms and borne all expenses including of boarding and lodging of the teams participating in 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Art Games in Incheon City, Korea (June 29 – July 6, 2013), 2nd Asian Youth Games, Nanjing, China (August 16-24, 2013), 20th Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow, Scotland (July 24 – August 3, 2014), 17th Asian Games held at Incheon, South Korea (September 19 – October 4, 2014) and  12th South Asian Games at Guwahati and Shillong, India (February 5-16, 2016).

Moreover, the PSB arranged for services of Judo Foreign Coach for training of athletes to improve the performance of National players at International level. The minister said that PSB was in process of arranging foreign coaches for some other sports disciplines.

Describing the job responsibilities of the Board, the minister told that the PSB also monitored the performance of National Sports Federations by evaluating their activities and performance at International level and annual grants to these federations were released on submission of their audited reports. The Federations that failed to submit the audited reports of the previous year were not funded. The National Sports Federations submit their participation reports in international events to PSB. After examination of the report, PSB issues instructions to the Federations for improvements.

Other than sponsoring the teams for international events, the Board also organized special sports events including Prime Minister’s Sports Festival, 2012 and Pakistan Inter-Board Sports in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The PSB has also been organizing the Inter-Provincial Sports Tournaments regularly. These tournaments are organized in rotation in various Provinces of the country including AJK, Gilgit Baltistan, FATA and Islamabad. These include both boys and girls competitions and attract greater participation.

Presently, the Quaid-E-Azam Inter-Provincial Games 2016 are being held at Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad organized by PSB from 23rd to 26th April 2016.
