ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has decided to establish three new rehabilitation centers in the province to ensure the participation of special persons in the development tasks of the nation as a supportive force.

The formal approval to establish these centers were given in a meeting held at Civil Secretariat two days earlier. The meeting presided by Specialized Healthcare Secretary Najam Ahmad Shah decided to establish three new centers in district Sargodha, Rawalpindi and Bahawalpur which would benefit approximately 4500 patients at an estimated cost of Rs100 million during the current fiscal year.

The meeting was informed that International Council for Red Crescent (ICRC), Chal Foundation and Indus Karachi would assist the department for establishment of these centers.

It is to mention that Provincial Assembly of Punjab has passed the Punjab Disabled Persons (Employment and Rehabilitation) (Amendment) Bill, 2015 to further amend the Disabled Persons (Employment and Rehabilitation) Ordinance, 1981. It was aimed to ensure legal right for employment, rehabilitation and welfare to special persons in the province. It also suggested creating funds for Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons and forming Provincial Council to oversee and resolve the matters related to disabled persons. The Provincial Council has a mandate to undertake appropriate projects for welfare of disabled persons under sub-section (b) of Section 6 of this law.

The Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Department has made all the compulsory arrangements including identification, transfer and possession of land and PC-1 for the construction of these centers. The department is confident that this initiative would provide additional space towards self-independence of special persons and also share the burden of patients at various overcrowded rehabilitation centers in the province.
