Senate delays budget discussion

ISLAMABAD: The Upper House could not start general discussion on the fiscal budget 2014-15 on Friday as the House agreed to PPPP Senator Mian Raza Rabbani’s request to adjourn it till June 9, 2014 (Monday).

The House had to start debate on federal budget to make recommendations to the National Assembly on Finance Bill following motion moved by Minister for Finance Mohammad Ishaq Dar on June, 3, 2014.

After the 18th Constitutional Amendment, the Senate provides recommendations on the budget to the National Assembly in 14 days on the Finance Bill, 2014, containing the Annual Budget Statement.

Senate Chairman Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari announced to adjourn the budget debate till Monday despite being on the agenda when the lawmakers from treasury and opposition agreed to it.

Twelve points of order (POs) consumed 73 per cent of the proceedings’ time that consumed 46 minutes of 63 minutes proceedings. The POs were moved by Haji Adeel, Zahid Khan, Shahi Syed, Afrasiyab Khattan (ANP), Saeed Iqbal, Raza Rabbani, Saeed Ghani, Sehar Kamran (PPPP), Rubina Irfan (PML), Abdul Rauf (PkMAP), Haji Ghulam Ali (JUI-F) and Raja Zafar ul Haq (PML-N).

Leader of the House Raja Zafar ul Haq laid the Annual Report of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) for the year 2012-2013.
The House welcomed the Ambassador of Argentina who came to the House to witness the proceedings.
