Senate takes up 13 CANs during 123rd session

Opposition walks out from senate

ISLAMABAD:  The Senate took up 13 Calling Attention Notices (CANs) during 123rd session that was prorogued sine die after having ten sitting from January 11 to January 22, 2016.

Out of these 13 CANs, three CANs were addressed to Capital Administration and Development Division; two CANs each were related to Ministries of Commerce; Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatization; Water and Power and one each to Ministries of National Food Security and Research; Petroleum and Natural Resources; Interior and Narcotics Control and Aviation Division.

Three CANs addressed to Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) were about dumping of garbage and waste in Nullah Lai in Islamabad,  wastage of precious time of students due to the protests being carried out by the teachers in Islamabad and delay in completion of Islamabad Citizens’ Club in F-9 Park, Islamabad.

All these three CANs were responded to by the Minister for CADD Tariq Fazal Chauadhry who assured to look into these issues. About CAN relate to Nullah Lai, the minister said that 52 vehicles are working to dispose of garbage on daily basis while a Chinese company has given offer for reconstruction of Nullah Lai. Regarding CAN about protest of teachers in Islamabad, minister give a brief statement and said that there are 8076 total strength of our regular teachers who are taking classes on regular basis. He said that out of 1364 daily wages teacher, some are on strike.

To another CAN related to his ministry, the minister said that said that project of Islamabad Citizens’ Club in F-9 Park will be completed this year.

Two CANs related to Ministry of Commerce were about import of various vegetables and fruit from Iran and the decision of ECC to give a subsidy to the sugar mills. Minister for Commerce Khurrum Distigar Khan responded to these CANs and said import of fruit has not been made from Iran for last one year while he also rejected about provision of subsidy to the sugar mill owners.

One CAN addressed to ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources was about Low pressure/shortage of gas in various parts of the country. Another CAN addressed to ministry of National Food Security and Research, Minister Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan was regarding shortage of wheat in Gilgit Baltistan.

Other issues highlighted through these CANs were expensive electricity production at Nandipur Power Plant; power disconnection to WASA (Hyderabad);  reduction in profit rates of National Saving Schemes and unequal representation to smaller provinces and FATA in the Governing Council and functional membership of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics; attack on Polio Vaccination team in Quetta and non-increase in pension of employees of PIA.

Out of these 13 CANs, five  CANs were raised by MQM lawmakers followed by PML-N lawmakers (3), PPPP (2), NP (one). One CAN was jointly sponsored by Independent and PkMAP lawmaker and one jointly by MQM and PTI lawmakers.
