World Bank gives nod to Dasu Dam

ISLAMABAD: Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar says the international community has posed confidence on the
current government by approving a financial package of $588 million for the Dasu Hydropower Dam under the
auspices of the World Bank.

Briefing the National Assembly about the approval for the project during the 5th sitting of ongoing budget session, the minister said the
World Bank has approved the project with 100% votes in its favor and the United States also backed in favor of Pakistan, adding the 4,500MW project will cost Rs 700 billion.

He said Rs 50 billion have been earmarked for the Diamir Bhasha Dam on the directions of the Prime Minister, adding it is not true that the government is undertaking Punjab-centric projects and Dasu Dam is one example.

The House also continued its general discussion on the budget 2014-15 and 15 members expressed their views on the budgetary proposals. A total of 31 members were present at the start and 39 at the adjournment of the sitting which met for six hours and 10 minutes.

Fifteen members participated in the budget debate. Five PML-N members including Umer Ayub, Tahir Iqbal, Ishaq Dar, Nigat Perveen ,
Pervaiz Malik addressed the house for an hour and 53 minutes. Three PPPP legislators – Mir Ejaz Jhakrani, Ayaz Soomro and Shahida Rehmani – spoke for 55 minutes while two MQM MNAs –Tahira Asif and Syed Hasan and two PTI lawmakers Nafeesa Inayat Khattak and Nasir Khan Khattak participated in the debate for 54 and 13 minutes respectively.

The sole member of AMLP Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed addressed for 25 minutes and one each member of PkMAP – Abdul Rahim Mandokhel
– spoke for 25 minutes) and JI’s Sher Akbar Khan for 20 minutes.

The Prime Minister attended the sitting for 33 minutes while the Leader of the Opposition Khursheed Shah was present for 50 minutes.
The Finance Minister attended the sitting for an hour and 22 minutes. The Speaker presided over the proceedings for
an hour and 40 minutes while the Deputy Speaker chaired the rest of the sitting.
